Over Thirty Dead as Floods, Landslides Batter Sri Lanka
Rescue teams are struggling to reach devastated communities as extreme weather continues to batter the island. Heavy downpours, surging floodwaters, and repeated landslides — ongoing since Nov. 17 — have upended daily life across numerous districts, according to media.
Data from the Disaster Management Center shows more than 4,000 residents across 17 districts have been severely impacted, and 10 people have been injured amid the worsening conditions.
Batticaloa has been among the worst affected areas, logging more than 300 millimeters of rainfall — an unusually high volume for such a short timeframe.
Officials say a stubborn low-pressure system lodged over the island is fueling powerful winds and unrelenting bursts of rainfall.
In response, authorities have issued a red-alert landslide warning for eight high-risk districts, citing imminent danger to steep terrains, hillside settlements, and other vulnerable regions.
Residents in these districts are being urged to stay vigilant, limit travel, and be prepared to evacuate immediately if conditions deteriorate further.
